Two brothers, forming part of a desert community, asked their master to give them penance for serious sins they had committed. The master readily told them to fast on bread and water and live in solitude apart from the community for a whole year.
When the year had passed, the brothers returned to their community. The first one was thin, ashen-faced and visibly depressed. The second one had a plump face, rosy cheeks and a healthy look.
"What were your reflections during these months you spent doing penance?" asked the master.
The first one replied that he was constantly thinking of the punishment that he merited and eternal hellfire. The second one replied that all the while he reflected upon God's infinite mercy and His love for all sinners.
The master welcomed them back into their community, whilst acknowledging who of the two possessed the greater wisdom.
