I can't remember if it was when he was a soldier in Korea or Vietnam. At any rate, one day this soldier receives an urgent telegram instructing him to return home since his father was dying. As soon as he set foot from the plane he jumped into a waiting car which took him directly to the hospital. He went straight in and and directed to the bedside of the dying man. Immediately he noticed that a mistake had been made. A serious mistake. That man was not his father ! But noticing that the dying man was approaching the end and was in no condition to recognise anybody, he took hold of his hand and said : "Dad, I'm here !" The man squeezed his hand and smiled. He seemed to have been waiting for his son's arrival because soon after he passed away.
When he was asked why he had acted like that, when he had known that the man was not his father, he simply replied: "I stayed there because I realised that that man needed a son."
In the difficult moments of our life we too need someone who stays at our side and squeezes gently our hand. Jesus knows this. He understands our deepest needs.
No wonder the Psalmist gives this advice: "Surrender yourself in the Lord's hands, trust in Him, and let Him guide your life."
