It is not hard to see the forces of evil at work. While impressive high-rise office buildings spring up in New York, Chicago, Paris, London, Amsterdam,...more and more people have no house to live in, not even a mattress to sleep on. While tons of food are dumped to keep prices high, millions die from hunger every year. While billions of dollars are spent to build complex weapon systems for the national defence, few resources are devoted to the needs of the homeless, the refugees, the illiterate, the hungry, the elderly, the unborn, the handicapped, the chronically ill, prisoners and countless people suffering under emotional stress.
As the gap between the powerless and the powerful, the poor and the wealthy, the sick and the healthy grows wider, it becomes harder for us to see each other as brothers and sisters, children of a loving God who invites us to live in the house of love.
Henri Nouwen In the House of the Lord
