Two bricklayers were hard at work on a building site. A passer-by stopped and asked what they were doing. "I'm laying bricks," said the first. "I'm building a cathedral," said the second.
So we see that while there is only one world and one truth, there are two radically different visions of that truth - the short term and the long term; the temporal and the eternal.
The story of the brick-layers is closer to home than we think, for we too are laying bricks; our lives as Christians are about building the Kingdom of God. Which brick-layer would you be ? Do you feel as if you just have to get on with this frustrating life, and that eternity with God is in the distant future ? Or do you see life against the eternal backdrop, the building of His Kingdom ? For that is our task, whatever our circumstances.
We cannot all be actors or actresses, pop stars, tycoons. But as Mother Theresa once said, God does not ask us to be successful; He asks us to be faithful.
The daily chores of life are our vocation. A more exciting job, a more dynamic social life - these things don't get us closer to God. What gets us closer to God is the realisation that we are working with Him and for Him whoever we are, wherever we are.
