The Gospels are the "Good News" in which God is telling us who He is. God is love. That means that he does not get angry. When Jesus was asked how God feels about sin, he told the Parable of the Prodigal Son. The father in the parable (God) never gets angry at his wayward son. Further, Jesus tells Peter that love never stops forgiving.
This truth means that God does not punish. Students grasp this easily. It is not their tutor who fails them in their exams. The tutor merely records their performance. Likewise it is God's will and hope that we succeed. If we wander away from Him, He will wait for us, like the father in the parable. It is possible, however, that we may leave God and never come back. We can fail in the course of life and love. God will regretfully record our performance. He will allow us the choice we have made. He is not a vindictive God but a loving God.
