About Dr. Leonard F. LaBar (Len)
Dr. LaBar is a renowned author of 9 books including Ultimate Cycling Adventures, Morning Strength and The Last of the Coastal People, as well as shorter newspaper and magazine publications. Dr. LaBar has written books, speeches, training courses, technical manuals, proposals, design specs, ad copy, web sites, and newspaper stories. He enjoys outdoor activities, is a musician/songwriter and is employed as a senior technical writer. He is married with two sons. He has an ASEE from Oregon Institute of Technology, a BSBA from San Jose State University and a BA, MA and DMin from Patriot Bible University. He lives in Milpitas, California and can be reached at len_labar@yahoo.com.
He has over 40 years of bicycle touring experience all across the USA and Canada. By the age of 13, LaBar was tinkering, rebuilding bicycles, and experimenting with changing gearing. He was first in his town to own a multi-speed bicycle. He has done frame building and has built tandem bicycles and recumbent bicycles. He has been active in two bicycle advocacy groups and was an important influence there and on city bikeway improvements. He is also in demand for speaking engagements on cycling topics.
In June of 1994, he authored and published his first book, "Len's Great Cycling Adventures" and did his own cover design and photography. It was sold to bicycle stores and College bookstores along the west coast and it made a profit becoming an instant hit. During the same time period, LaBar designed web pages and wrote a popular series for the local newspaper called "In the Bike Lane with Len LaBar".
1995 through 1998 were spent learning and writing music. During this time he also created several more web sites. Also during this time he entered several writing contests with "Biosphere" winning third place in a national writing contest beating 2,231 others. In 2006, he published a number of inspirational articles on faithwriters.com. Also at this time, he started attending writing workshops and joined a writer's support group where a number of his works were critiqued and improved upon.
At the beginning of 2007, some of his new articles were published in Reflections Magazine. In spring of 2007 he published "Bicycle Tech Tips", "Len's Great Cycling Adventures", "Ultimate Cycling Adventures", "A Lifetime of Adventure", "Favorite San Jose, CA Area Hikes", and "Morning Strength." In the winter of 2007, he wrote his first historical fiction work, "The Last of the Coastal People." In the fall of 2008, he wrote "Light Rail Adventures" about his experiences on the San Jose, CA light rail system.
