A house catches fire. The mother and father together with the two eldest children run out to safety. The youngest child panics and instead of following them outside, runs upstairs.
When the father realises what happened, it’s too late to go back into the house because the whole ground floor is ablaze.
An upstairs window suddenly swings open and the tiny head of the toddler can be seen over the ledge. He calls out to his father from amongst the smoke.
His father stands right below the window calling up through the smoke: “Jump, son, I’m down here waiting to catch you.”
“But I can’t see you, daddy,” replies the child.
“It doesn’t matter. Although you cannot see me, I’m still down here waiting to catch you. Jump and you’ll be safe. Trust me. Do not be afraid!”
How often has this episode repeated itself throughout our lives?
Incessantly, God, our Father, is calling to us. Urging us to trust Him, to have faith in Him; and we keep repeating “...but I cannot see you, God, where are you?
The plunge appears suicidal, senseless, and yet it is the only way to salvation.
We cannot see God, physically, that is. But He is calling to us continually to “let go” of our seemingly secure position and throw ourselves into His loving arms. He is pleading with us to trust our lives to his caring hands. |
