Depending on the size and complexity of your web site, maintaining your web site could be quite a headache!
It all depends on:
|
- The number of web pages you have
- The number of internal and external links
- Graphical images
- Internal databases etc…
|
To start with, you have to check for broken links in all your published web pages, both internal and external links.
Internal links; check that all your navigators are correctly linked, check that all your graphics are being correctly loaded etc…
External links are links to other web sites. If you link say a banner to another web site, and for some reason this web site is down, this will result in a broken link on your web site.
Today you will find a lot of tools that can help you check for broken links.
As regards to graphics, you have to review them personally. It could happen that the graphical image file is present on your server, so there is no broken link, but if it was not uploaded properly, the image will not show as it should. A good solution for this could be that once you have uploaded your graphics and checked them to show correctly, write protect your files on your server. Then depending on the software that you are using, set up your software not to overwrite write-protected files during uploads on your server. This should solve your problem!

Take your time to create a good disaster recovery plan. It is also very important to take regular backups both of your server and your PC. It can happen that the server, where your site is hosted, will have a hardware failure and you might lose all your data. It could also happen that your PC will have a hardware failure or get infected by a virus and lose all data. So taking backups is imperative as this may save you time and money!
